Amy’s Story

Amy's journey as an advocate and leader in behaviour support is deeply personal and full of resilience. She has lived with a disability for much of her life, as a proud Autistic woman with ADHD and someone who lives with a brain injury that occurred when she was a teenager.

Now, as a mother to Autistic children, Amy is someone who has 'walked' the path of Early Intervention as a parent and caregiver.

A self-confessed lifelong learner, Amy is perpetually curious about people and their thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. She brings this curiosity and drive for change to every interaction.

Driven by circumstance, fuelled by hope
Her business, Banksia Support Services, began in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the Royal Hospital for Women in Randwick, Sydney when her daughter, Grace, was born extremely prematurely, at just 26 weeks gestation.

Instinctively, Amy knew Grace would face many challenges and most likely have developmental barriers requiring early intervention and support. Coming from a regional community where such services were scarce and often had long waitlists, she knew there was a gap.

As timing would have it, Amy received an email from her employer around the same time, implying that she was not expected to return from maternity leave - her clients had been reassigned and her desk packed up.

Resilience at Work
As a Behaviour Support Practitioner and an Early Intervention Specialist, this was a crucial turning point in Amy’s career, proving to be an incredible opportunity.

Instead of wallowing, she was galvanised into action. Starting Banksia from her backroom, four months after Grace came home from the NICU.

Never underestimate the power of a mother who wants to get things done. Amy registered with the NDIS, bought a building, and developed the Banksia model of Behaviour Support. A model based on relationships, strong communication with clients, a commitment to best practices, improving quality of life, and advocating for a human rights approach to supporting safe behaviour.

Together we rise
When we share what we know, we create an environment to shape, encourage and build capability within the sector that benefits the children we’re here to support.

Today in her role as a clinical supervisor and a leader of behaviour support practitioners across Australia, Amy indirectly supports 2,500 families with disabilities through her mentorship.

She’s ready to equip Behaviour Support Practitioners with the skills and knowledge to support their clients and create change in the industry; understanding the NDIS capability framework.

Through her Data Analysis Program, she’s helping Practitioners track data collected from their participants to improve and support safe behavioural interventions and strategies.

Recognised change maker
Amy doesn’t do this type of work for the accolades or awards but knows it plays an important part in the change she wants to make in this world.

With multiple community and international awards under her skirt, Amy has been recognised for her outstanding leadership in business and disability sector capacity building.

Not bad for a woman who has struggled with disability most of her life.

Supporting you
Amy truly is a people person and someone who thrives on building relationships with those she supports.  She’s approachable and takes time to get to know you and what you need so she can provide Behaviour Support, Clinical Supervision, or Consultancy.

Supporting your teams

I promote quality of life for all people. I empower everyone, regardless of their abilities, to learn about themselves and lead lives that are meaningful to them. I advocate for policies and practices that promote equality, accessibility and fairness. I use my voice when others cannot and I stand up for what I believe to be reasonable to promote the inherent value of people with disabilities.
